The Importance of Performance

Dear Colleagues,

It is an honour to write this month’s blog!

I can’t believe it is March already! I have always loved March, more daylight, spring (hopefully it will show soon) and, last but not least, it is also the month that in the 1685 saw the birth of Johann Sebastian Bach! Just last Saturday I was lucky enough to be involved in a concert, playing a beautiful programme which included the Brandeburg Concerto N.3 in G major – BWV1048. What a great way to spend a Saturday afternoon! I would be very interested to know your favourite Bach’s piece!

Speaking about performances this weekend sees our first non-competitive String Festival. It will happen on the 11th of March (Varndean School) for grade 2-3 and then on the 18th of March for grade 4 players and above. Each day provides an exciting set of workshops and performance opportunities, from solos to quartets to full orchestra works as well as expert tuition from some of the city’s top string players. So far we have received more than 80 application and I am just so thrilled at the idea to have all these young musicians together for a couple of days of really good music.

The chair of Brighton & Hove City Council’s children, young people and skills committee, Councillor Dan Chapman has very kindly commented on our Festival: “This combination of expert tuition and performance opportunities is an exciting new way of nurturing young musical talent in the city. And you never know – today’s aspiring teenager could be tomorrow’s Paganini.”

As a musician and teacher I strongly believe that making music together is an essential part of our daily job. Events like the String Festival are a great motivational and inspirational boost for our students and also for their families who can see what a fabulous progress their children are making!

I would like to take this occasion to invite you all to attend performances of the Festival which on the 11th of March – Varndean School - will start from 1.30 pm for soloists and 2.30 pm for the Orchestra. On the 18th we will be at County Oak Avenue with performances starting from 3.30 pm. I hope to see you there.

Best wishes
