* Big Band and Youth Orchestra require an audition to join.  Our main audition period takes place during the summer term to enable players to join ensembles at the beginning of the academic year.  However, from time to time we offer auditions during the academic year so please apply to register your interest and we will be in touch with more details.

Percussion Group

5.15pm - 6.15pm

Grade 2-4

Percussion Group performs a wide range of music suitable for students grade 3-5 standard. This group will use percussion instruments for styles including pitched, un-pitched, body and junk percussion.

Percussion Ensemble

Mondays

6.30pm - 8.30pm

Grade 6 +

__

Percussion Ensemble performs a wide range of musical styles featuring pitched, un-pitched, body and junk percussion instruments. Recent repertoire includes arrangements of well known orchestral pieces and popular tunes as well as music written by ensemble members.

Youth String Orchestra

String orchestra offers an opportunity for string players to explore music in a range of styles and to develop ensemble skills as they work towards membership of our Youth Orchestra.

Jazz Band

Tuesdays

4.45pm - 5.45pm

Grade 3-5

__

Jazz Band provides an opportunity for players to develop improvisation and reading skills, while exploring a broad range of music. Recent performances have included swing, blues and Latin classics, through to modern day pop and funk styles. For many students this is their first experience of playing in a specialist jazz ensemble.

This band performs some of the most exciting repertoire written for this medium. Recent charts include numbers from Miles Davis, Charles Mingus and Stevie Wonder.

From Morricone to Milhaud, classical to contemporary, BHYWO provides an opportunity for woodwind, brass and percussion players to perform challenging repertoire in a diverse range of styles and genres.

Advanced String Ensemble

This group is open to advanced string players, including new members who would like to experience playing in a high-level chamber ensemble. To be eligible, players must also take part in Youth Orchestra (Friday Evenings).

This is open to advanced orchestral instrumentalists post grade 5. Performing challenging repertoire including Brahms Symphony No.2 and 20th Century works including film scores by Hollywood legend John Powell.

Wind Band

Beginner - Grade 2

This band provides players with their first opportunity of playing in an ensemble, whilst they explore the wide range of music written for this medium. These sessions will improve sight reading and ensemble skills, and benefit the development of stamina and technical ability.

String Group

Beginner - Grade 1

This String Group provides the first opportunity for young violinists, cellists and mini bass players to play together as part of a group. This is ideal for students who are in their first year of learning. You can join in even if you are a beginner or have only had a few lessons.

Junior String Orchestra

This Junior String Orchestra provides more experienced string players with opportunities to explore a greater diversity of musical styles, more complex parts playing and further develop their improvisation and composition skills.

Saturday Concert Band

The Saturday Concert Band is open to woodwind, brass and percussion players. The diverse repertoire includes arrangements in popular, television and film music in addition to contemporary compositions written specifically for the band.
